Laurel Glen Winery

One of Sonoma's best known wineries, Patrick Campbell's Laurel Glen Vineyard, has three different wine programs comprised of two wines each. Patrick began his winemaking career in 1981 on Sonoma Mountain, where he grows and produces two Cabernets: “Laurel Glen” and “Counterpoint”. He also produces two Malbecs from Mendoza, Argentina, and two Zinfandels from ancient vines in Lodi, the Heartland of California. His fruit sources are nothing short of amazing, and the wines great and constant from vintage to vintage.

2002 & 2003 Laurel Glen Cabernet
This is the best of the best from his Sonoma Mountain Vineyard. Patrick Campbell has owned and farmed this site for many years. It is recognized as one of the best vineyards in the state and it produces a wine that ages beautifully and gracefully. Low yields and old vines make this a wine to look for every vintage, BEWARE! The production of Laurel Glen is always very low. So check out Laurel Glen's website www.laurelglen.com for more information on how to get your hands on a bottle or two.

2003 Counterpoint Cabernet
Another Cabernet, but not just another Cabernet! This winery does two great Cabs, and this is the “Counterpoint” to the Laurel Glen. Huge structure, and a very long finish make this and the Laurel Glen hard to choose between. I have decided to go with both, as they are different, though with a common theme that comes from the great vineyard location on Sonoma Mountain.

2004 ZaZin
ZaZin is a great value wine. But don't let the price fool you into thinking it isn't the real thing. This wine is from 106 year old Zinfandel vines that are full of character and depth. These old-timers have seen the wine world come and go, and have learned to make a beautiful and delicious wine year in and out.

2005 REDS
Old vine Zins, particularly those grown in Lodi, are up there with my favorites. This region gets plenty of heat that allows the vines to ripen; the extra hang time assures that the sugars and acids reach that perfect synthesis of flavor. REDS is a great food wine. Pair it with pork roast, and you won't be disappointed!

2004 Terra Rosa Malbec
Many different wine regions have grown Malbec, but this noble grape has found its true home in Mendoza, Argentina. Here, ancient vines (some over 80 years of age) yield a dark, sensuous, exotic and eminently drinkable wine, that matches beautifully with grilled meats and hearty pasta dishes. Let's listen as Patrick Campbell tells us of his love for this grape and the land in which it is grown.

2004 Vale LA Pena Malbec
This part of Laurel Glen's wine program is off the charts. It is quite simply the best Malbec I have ever tasted. This wine comes from a single vineyard high up in elevation and with very small yields, which produce an absolutely fabulous and very limited quantity wine. Do yourself a favor and get a bottle of this Malbec, you will not regret it!
