The Williams family have been producing some of Washington's best wines for many years. During the course of the next year or two we will tell you about all of them. A beautiful new winery just built on Red Mountain is now the home to Kiona Vineyard and Winery. They make many wines all from their estate vineyards. Please visit the winery and the website, as new vintages are being released a few times each year. Kiona Vineyard and Winery offer you a diverse and full menu of Washington's finest.

Kiona Vineyard and Winery

Lemberger
The first commercial Lemberger planting in the new world was by Kiona in 1976.The first vintage was in 1980. A rich wine that goes with many different dishes. Let's see what the wine maker Scott Williams has to say about this wine!

Red Mountain Syrah
This is a full-bodied fruit loaded Syrah and is produced from Kiona's reputable vineyards on Red Mountain. This area is now world famous for wines like this Syrah! I had a great time featuring this wine, and love the story of the wine, as well as the bottle.

Red Mountain Reserve Merlot
Carefully tended small lot fermentation using mostly whole berries yields a very complex and high aromatic Merlot. Merlot is my favorite wine, and this one speaks of the vineyard in every taste. Delicate flavors compliment an impressively structured wine that will grace dinning without being overpowering. I think I will open a bottle right now while Scott Williams will tell you all about this wine.

Kiona Ice Wine
They had no problem making ice wine this year! Wow, this wine is great! To make an ice wine you have to freeze the grapes on the vine. When the temperature drops to 18 -20 degrees the grapes are ready to harvest. These grapes become little “BB's” of extract juice. Washington State does a great number of ice wines and this is one of the best. This is great with dessert, or as dessert....Scott points that out, I believe!

2004 Red Mountain Estate Dry Riesling
This wine comes from 30 plus year old vines from Red Mountain. Many wineries ripped out Riesling and planted other grapes, the thinking being to plant other grapes and make more money. This vineyard is a jewel and the wine speaks for itself. Cheers!

Kiona 2005 Estate Chardonnay
This is a new release of their Estate Chardonnay. Kiona and winemaker Scott Williams are adding some different grapes to this 2005 blend. The Estate Chardonnay has a great track record, which I think is about to get even better. After listening to this new segment, please look into buying some of this Chardonnay. Mainly because when people try this wine it will not last long.

Kiona 2005 Ice Wine
Dessert in itself! I have a great time talking with Scott and the Williams family. They have been making great wines in Washington State for 30 plus years. This ice wine, along with the new release from Kestrel, might be in the best of the best from this state. The bottom line is, if you enjoy drinking your dessert, this wine is for you.

In this interview I did a couple years ago, John Williams tells us of the beginning of Washington wines and the beginning of Yakima Valley. This man has worked all his life and exudes a passion for the wines that Kiona creates.
